Excerpt from The Life of Voltaire: With Interesting Particulars Respecting His Death, and Anecdotes and Characters of His Contemporaries
The History of the Life of Voltaire necessarily comprehends in a general view great part of the political and literary occurrences in Europe, during the eighteenth century. In this work, however, I have confined myself to much the same course as his biographers have already pursued, occasionally giving sketches of the characters of those who were his most determined antagonists, or most devoted admirers.
