The Nest is a beautifully written story that addresses the challenging and heartbreaking experience of letting children go. Mother Duck's one desire is to have a family. When the joyous event finally happens, Mother Duck is completely happy. She raises her children with love and devotion. Time passes and Mother Duck realizes that her babies are grown and the day has come to let them go. She sits in her empty nest and cries. Then one day she hears a familiar sound in the distance. Her children are returning to her. Mother Duck learns that she gave them what they truly needed: the ability to love and be loved.
